Kashmir in July: weather, monsoon rain and Yatra roads

Kashmir in July: temperatures and thunder days for Srinagar, Pahalgam and Gulmarg, Amarnath Yatra traffic rules, monsoon landslides and the high roads.

July is Kashmir’s warmest month, and in 2026 the Amarnath Yatra ran through almost all of it, so plan for heat in Srinagar, rain in the mountains and convoy rules on the Pahalgam and Sonamarg roads. On 1991–2020 averages Srinagar reaches 30.0°C by day and 18.4°C at night, Pahalgam 25.5°C and Gulmarg 21.1°C. Thunder is common: Pahalgam averages 8.1 days with thunder in July. In July 2026 heavy rain shut the Jammu–Srinagar highway for days and halted the Yatra from 19 to 24 July. The 2026 Yatra ran from 3 July to 28 August; the 2027 dates were not announced as of 24 October 2026.

Is July a good time to visit Kashmir?

It is if you want the warmest weather of the year and can work around the pilgrimage traffic and the rain:

  • For: the warmest days of the year at every station below, and the high roads: for the Gurez road, “July and August are generally the most dependable”, says Travel Coffee.
  • Against: Yatra convoy timings and cut-offs for tourist vehicles on the Jammu highway and the Pahalgam and Sonamarg roads, and monsoon spells that can bring landslides, flash floods and road closures for days at a time.
  • Not certain: settled weather. On 5 July 2025 Srinagar sweltered at 37.4°C; on 22 July 2026 it reached only 20.0°C.

The trade-offs of every other month are in the best time to visit Kashmir, and the month before is in Kashmir in June.

July weather by place

Place Day Night Rain Wet days* Days with thunder
Srinagar 30.0°C 18.4°C 64.0 mm 5.0 6.6
Qazigund 28.0°C 16.8°C 105.8 mm 6.5 5.9
Pahalgam 25.5°C 12.9°C 107.1 mm 8.8 8.1
Gulmarg 21.1°C 12.0°C 101.7 mm 8.3 3.4

*Average day high and night low. Wet days have at least 2.5 mm of rain. WMO Climate Normals 1991–2020 for the IMD stations at Srinagar (42027), Qazigund (42044), Pahalgam (42028) and Gulmarg (42026), published by NOAA NCEI. Qazigund is at the valley end of the Jammu–Srinagar highway.

Rain and snow by month, Pahalgam millimetres, as water
  1. 171.2
  2. 38.2

WMO Climate Normals 1991–2020, station 42028 Pahalgam. Wettest: March, 171.2 mm. Driest: October, 38.2 mm.

July is the warmest month at all four stations, though it is not the wettest: Srinagar’s 64.0 mm is well below March’s 104.6 mm. It is wetter than June in Srinagar, Qazigund and Pahalgam, and Pahalgam’s rain keeps rising into August (114.9 mm). Thunder is less frequent than in May and June at Srinagar, Pahalgam and Gulmarg (Qazigund’s June and July are level, at 5.9 days): Pahalgam averages 11.1 days with thunder in June and 8.1 in July, Gulmarg 7.4 and 3.4. A single July day can still bring a lot of rain: Srinagar’s wettest July day on its station record is 130.3 mm, on 16 July 2005.

Real July days stray far from the averages, in both directions:

  • Heat: on 5 July 2025 Srinagar recorded 37.4°C, its highest July temperature since 1953, and Pahalgam 31.6°C, its highest July temperature on record, Kashmir Life reported. Srinagar’s all-time high is 38.3°C, on 10 July 1946.
  • Cold rain: on 22 July 2026 Srinagar reached only 20.0°C, “nearly 9.9°C below normal”, and Gulmarg “just 14.5°C”, Kashmir Life reported.

Every month is in Kashmir weather month by month, and Pahalgam’s whole year is in Pahalgam weather.

Is there snow in Kashmir in July?

We found no report of fresh snow in Kashmir in July 2025 or July 2026. The first snow of the next season came later: in late August 2025 at Sonamarg and the Zoji La, Deccan Herald reported, and on 5 September 2026 “from areas above around 3,900 metres”, UNI reported. The averages count rain and snow together, so they can’t say more. The whole season is in snowfall in Kashmir.

The Amarnath Yatra: what it means if you are not on it

The Yatra has two routes, from Pahalgam and from Baltal, which lies “15 km east of Sonamarg”, according to the Ganderbal district administration, and pilgrim convoys from Jammu use the Jammu–Srinagar highway (NH 44). For 2026 the Traffic Police Headquarters issued an advisory “for pilgrims, tourists and non-convoy vehicles”, in force from 2 July to 28 August, Kashmir Life reported on 30 June 2026. The rules for 2027 have not been published.

Yatri and tourist vehicles, 2026 Cut-off
Through the Navyug Tunnel towards Kashmir by 3:00 pm
Leaving Pahalgam for Jammu or Srinagar by 3:30 pm
Leaving Sonamarg for Srinagar by 4:00 pm
Gulmarg to Srinagar, or Srinagar to Gulmarg by 5:00 pm
Any travel within the Kashmir Valley 7:00 am to 6:00 pm
Leaving Baltal base camp towards the tunnel by 9:00 am

From the revised advisory as reported by Kashmir Life, 30 June 2026. An earlier version, reported by Kashmir News Service on 24 June, barred movement from Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Gulmarg towards Srinagar “post 6 pm”.

  • Convoys: in 2026 the Baltal convoy left Jammu at 4:00 am and the Pahalgam convoy at 4:15 am, crossing Banihal by 10:00 am and 10:45 am, according to the Kashmir Observer. On 2 July, when the first batch of pilgrims was to leave Jammu, other light vehicles from Nagrota towards Udhampur were to be let through once the tail of the convoy crossed Jakheni, News On Air reported.
  • After 6 pm: “After the withdrawal of the Road Opening Party (ROP), no further movement of yatri or tourist vehicles will be permitted”, and such vehicles are halted at the nearest Yatra or security forces camp, Kashmir Life reported. Plan to reach your hotel before 6 pm.
  • The highway itself: in its advisory for 6 July 2026 the Traffic Police blamed the previous day’s slow traffic on single-lane conditions between Marog and Kishtwari Pather, and advised travel on NH 44 “only during daytime”, warning of landslides, shooting stones and roadworks between Ramban and Banihal, Greater Kashmir reported. See Jammu to Srinagar.
  • Pahalgam and Sonamarg: neither town is on the official list of closed destinations. Chandanwari, on the Pahalgam route, is on it, closed to tourists under orders that run to 31 December 2026. We found no 2026 order limiting tourist hotels in either town; hotels, lodges and guest houses “designated for pilgrims” had fire safety audits, the Kashmir Observer reported.

From Srinagar, Pahalgam is an estimated 2½–3½ hours by road, Sonamarg 2–3 hours and Baltal 2¼–3¼ hours, according to the Go Kashmir app as of 24 October 2026. See the Pahalgam guide and the Sonamarg guide.

Monsoon spells: cloudbursts, landslides and the highway

July rain comes in spells, and a bad one can close roads, routes and resorts for days. What happened in the last two Julys:

  1. 16–17 Jul 2025
A landslide at Railpathri on the Baltal route killed a pilgrim from Rajasthan and injured three, and the Yatra was suspended for 17 July from both base camps, Outlook Traveller reported. No convoy left Jammu that day, News On Air reported.
  2. 11 Jul 2026
Two cloudbursts, at Shangus and at Overa Wildlife Sanctuary in the Pahalgam area, sent flash floods into orchards, huts and hotels; no casualties were reported, News Arena India reported.
  3. 19 Jul 2026
The Yatra was suspended on both routes after the Meteorological Centre Srinagar forecast a wet spell from 19 to 23 July, with possible landslides and flash floods at places including Pahalgam, Gulmarg, the Sonamarg–Zojila axis and Bandipora–Razdan Pass, ETV Bharat reported.
  4. 22 Jul 2026
The Lidder reached its flood declaration mark, 1.55 metres, “just 10 centimetres short of the danger level”, Kashmir Life reported. Doodhpathri was closed to tourists because of rain, flash floods and landslides on its approach roads, Rising Kashmir reported. The Traffic Police suspended traffic on NH 44 after landslides in Ramban district, The Tribune reported.
  5. 23–24 Jul 2026
NH 44 was still shut, with more than 1,000 vehicles stranded, while the Mughal Road and the Srinagar–Sonamarg–Gumri (SSG) road “remained open despite persistent rainfall”, The Tribune reported. On 24 July Northern Railway ran special trains for more than 1,500 stranded people.
  6. 25 Jul 2026
The Yatra resumed after six days, with 6,269 pilgrims leaving Jammu for Baltal, Greater Kashmir reported. The Mughal Road closed after multiple landslides, Kashmir Life reported.
  7. 27 Jul 2026
A fresh landslide at Dewal in Udhampur district blocked NH 44, leaving about 1,700 trucks stranded, Kashmir Life reported.
  8. 31 Jul 2026
The Traffic Police announced no vehicle movement on NH 44 all day, for repairs in Udhampur and Ramban districts, ANI reported. The Yatra remained suspended on the Baltal route, and the Pahalgam route was also closed, Kashmir Age reported.

Doodhpathri reopened on 21 August 2026, the Kashmir Observer reported.

Before a drive to Pahalgam, Sonamarg or Gurez in a wet spell, the Go Kashmir app’s place card for each shows a 4-day forecast with the chance of rain.

The high roads in July: Zoji La, Gurez and the Mughal Road

  • Zoji La, towards Ladakh: the SSG road, which snow on the Zoji La closes in winter, as in December 2024 (Greater Kashmir), stayed open in the rain of 23 July 2026, The Tribune reported. The Meteorological Centre’s advisory for 19 to 23 July still named the Sonamarg–Zojila axis among the places where landslides and flash floods could strike. See Srinagar to Leh by road.
  • Gurez: “July and August are generally the most dependable for road access”, says Travel Coffee, and the road is “usually most dependable from late May or June through September”. Bandipora–Razdan Pass, on the way, was on the same Met Centre list. Gurez is an estimated 5½–7¾ hours by road from Srinagar, according to the Go Kashmir app as of 24 October 2026. See the Gurez guide.
  • Mughal Road: open in the rain on 23 July 2026 and closed by landslides on 25 July, as above. During the 2026 Yatra, empty fuel and LPG tankers and empty Food Corporation of India vehicles returning to Jammu were directed to use it, Greater Kashmir reported.

What’s closed in July

  • Weather closures are separate from the list: Doodhpathri was closed to tourists from 22 July to 21 August 2026.
  • Gulmarg Gondola: under a notice from the J&K Cable Car Corporation, the Gondola “shall remain closed on the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month for preventive maintenance”. In July 2027 those are 12 and 26 July. See Gondola tickets.

Muharram processions: June, not July, in 2026

Shia Muslims in Srinagar mark Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, with processions, and the Traffic Police diverts traffic around the routes. In 2025 Ashura fell on 6 July, and the Zuljanah procession went from Botakadal to Zadibal, News On Air reported. In 2026 it fell on 26 June, with the main Zuljinah procession “from Bota Kadal to Imambara Zadibal”, according to a Traffic Police advisory reported by the Kashmir Observer. The Islamic calendar is lunar, so the date moves earlier each year: in 2027 Ashura is likely in mid-June, but the date was not announced as of 24 October 2026. More in Kashmir in June.

Getting in and out when the highway shuts

The railway kept moving when NH 44 closed in July 2026: Northern Railway ran special trains from Sangaldan via Banihal and Anantnag to Srinagar, and from Srinagar to Katra, for stranded travellers, The Tribune reported. Regular services are in Vande Bharat to Srinagar. For the 2026 Yatra the Traffic Police published helpline numbers for yatris and tourists; the Srinagar Traffic Control Unit’s included 0194-2450022 and 103, Kashmir News Service reported.

  • Keep a spare day either side of the Jammu drive or a flight, in case rain shuts NH 44.
  • Plan drives to reach your hotel before 6 pm while the Yatra is on.
  • Check the 2027 Yatra dates and traffic advisory once they are announced.
  • Avoid the Gondola on 12 and 26 July 2027, its maintenance Mondays under the current notice.
  • Keep away from fast-moving streams after rain.

What to wear in July

In Srinagar, dress for days around 30°C; in Gulmarg and Pahalgam, nights average 12–13°C, and a rainy day can be much colder, as on 22 July 2026. Higher up the weather turns fast. For pilgrims trekking to the Amarnath cave, the J&K Police advise woollens and rain gear “as the climate is unpredictable and changes abruptly from sunny weather to rain and snow. The temperature may sometimes abruptly fall to 5 degrees Celsius or lower.” Its list:

  • Woollen clothing, a jacket, woollen socks and trousers
  • A wind-cheater and a raincoat
  • A small umbrella that straps to the head
  • Waterproof shoes and a walking stick with a good grip
  • A cap, gloves and a torch

From the Shri Amarnath Yatra guidelines of J&K Police. Read 24 Oct 2026.

July questions

Is July a good time to visit Kashmir?

For the warmest weather and the high roads, yes. Expect Yatra traffic rules on the Jammu highway and the Pahalgam and Sonamarg roads, and monsoon spells: in July 2026 rain shut NH 44 for days and halted the Yatra from 19 to 24 July.

Is there snow in Kashmir in July?

We found no report of fresh snow in July 2025 or 2026. The first snow of the season came in late August 2025 and on 5 September 2026, on the high reaches.

What is the temperature in Kashmir in July?

On 1991–2020 averages, 30.0°C by day and 18.4°C at night in Srinagar, 25.5°C and 12.9°C in Pahalgam, and 21.1°C and 12.0°C in Gulmarg.

Is it the rainy season in Kashmir in July?

July is wetter than June but not the wettest month; March is. Rain comes in spells with thunder, and a heavy spell can bring landslides and flash floods, as in late July 2026.

Can tourists visit Pahalgam and Sonamarg during the Amarnath Yatra?

Neither town is on the official closed list, and the 2026 Yatra advisory set times for tourist vehicles on both roads: leave Pahalgam by 3:30 pm and Sonamarg by 4:00 pm for Srinagar, and travel in the valley only between 7 am and 6 pm.

What should I wear in Kashmir in July?

Light clothes for Srinagar’s 30°C days, warm layers for Pahalgam and Gulmarg nights, and rain gear everywhere. For high-altitude treks the J&K Police list woollens, a raincoat, a wind-cheater and waterproof shoes.
