The official rules

• Maximum fares, raised 18% in 2026. In April 2026 the Transport Department told the Transport Commissioner to fix revised maximum fares for commercial passenger vehicles, including the Sumo, Bolero, Indica, Swift, Tavera, Scorpio, Xylo, Innova and Fortuner, at 18% above the rates in SRO-97 of 19 March 2021. It was the first revision since 2021, the Kashmir Reader reported on 30 April 2026.
• Route permits. Taxis may operate only on routes for which they hold a valid permit. The J&K High Court said so in a 2024 case about Pahalgam’s tourist taxi stands, and criticised registered operators who “fleece the tourists”, Kashmir Life reported. Around Pahalgam, local trips may therefore be run by the local stands rather than your Srinagar driver. Before you get in

• Agree the total price, and whether it is one way or return.
• Agree the car type, such as a sedan or an Innova. Prices differ by vehicle.
• Ask what is included: waiting time, a second stop, parking and tolls.
• Ask whether the driver can go beyond the main stop, say from Pahalgam to Aru or Betaab, or whether you will need a local taxi there.
• In winter, check how far the road is open. Vargis Khan notes that taxis may only reach Tangmarg rather than Gulmarg.

Buses and shared cabs

The government’s Jammu & Kashmir Road Transport Corporation, JKRTC, lists Srinagar to Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg among the routes of its tourist services division, and Srinagar to Tangmarg among its district routes. Its fare list carries no date, and the April 2026 order raising maximum fares covers buses as well as taxis, so ask the JKRTC helpline, 9149473175, for fares and timings. Its website points to starbus.jk.gov.in for online booking.

Shared taxis, “locally known as sumos” (101Reporters, 2024), run daily from Srinagar to Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg for ₹500–₹900 a seat, according to Vargis Khan’s list. Uber started UberGo and Intercity rides in Srinagar on 30 January 2024, with Intercity trips to Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam, Greater Kashmir reported. We found no 2026 report on whether Uber still runs these rides.

On 4 October 2026 Baramulla police urged tourists to report overcharging or harassment in the Tangmarg–Kunzer–Gulmarg area, and cautioned them against being “forced to change vehicles at Tangmarg, Kunzer or Gulmarg on the pretext that only local vehicles are allowed to operate there”, Kashmir Life reported. How long is the drive?

Drive times change with traffic, weather and roadworks. The Go Kashmir app estimates Gulmarg at 1½–2¼ hours from Srinagar, Sonamarg at 2–3 hours and Pahalgam at 2½–3½ hours, as of 22 October 2026, and shows an estimated road time on every place card.
