Planning
How many days do you need in Kashmir?
How many days Kashmir takes, worked out from road times: what fits in 3, 4, 5, 7 and 10 days from a Srinagar base, and why Pahalgam deserves a night.
Five days is enough for Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam at a sensible pace, and three days covers Srinagar and one of them. Road time decides it. From Srinagar, Gulmarg and Sonamarg each mean about 3–6 hours of driving there and back, and Pahalgam 5–7 hours, so Pahalgam works better with a night’s stay.

Why road time decides your days
| Day out from Srinagar | One way | There and back |
|---|---|---|
| Dal Lake | 20–25 min | Under 1 hour |
| Gulmarg | 1½–2¼ h | 3–4½ h |
| Doodhpathri | 1½–2 h | 3–4 h |
| Yusmarg (shut to tourists 4 Sep 2026) | 1½–2¼ h | 3–4½ h |
| Sonamarg | 2–3 h | 4–6 h |
| Pahalgam | 2½–3½ h | 5–7 h |
Go Kashmir app road-time estimates from Srinagar, as of 22 October 2026. Traffic, snow and roadworks can add time, especially in winter.
A day with 5–7 hours of driving leaves little time at the destination, which is why we suggest a night in Pahalgam rather than a day trip.
What fits in 3, 4, 5, 7 and 10 days
For day-by-day plans with a road time for every leg, see our Kashmir itinerary.
3 days: Srinagar and one more
- Day 1: arrive in Srinagar; Dal Lake by shikara at the official rates, and the city’s gardens (what to see in Srinagar).
- Day 2: a Gulmarg day out, with the Gondola booked ahead (tickets).
- Day 3: a short morning in Srinagar, then leave.
4 days: add Sonamarg
- Days 1 and 2 as above.
- Day 3: a Sonamarg day out, with 4–6 hours on the road.
- Day 4: leave.
5 days: all four
- Day 1: Srinagar.
- Day 2: Gulmarg.
- Day 3: Sonamarg.
- Days 4–5: drive to Pahalgam, stay a night, see Betaab or Aru, then return to Srinagar or head on.
7 days: slower, with spares
- The 5-day plan, plus a spare day for weather or a Gondola reschedule, and one more day out.
- Doodhpathri and Yusmarg (3–4½ hours there and back) were ordered reopened in February 2026. Doodhpathri reopened on 21 August 2026 after a weather closure, the Kashmir Observer reported. On 4 September 2026 the Kashmir Observer reported that Yusmarg “has been shut for tourists” during a security operation, and we found no report of it reopening by 24 October. Confirm access locally first.
10 days: further out
- Add places beyond the main circuit, such as Gurez: allow two days at least, and know that its road closes after snow.
- Check closures and road status first, because some valleys and trek routes are closed in 2026 (see the list).
What it costs
Prices for three things in the plans above, each from one of our dated fare guides:
- Taxi, Srinagar to Gulmarg: ₹2,600 one way, on an operator’s 2026–27 rate list updated in November 2025 (Vargis Khan). See Srinagar taxi fares.
- Shikara on Dal Lake: ₹700 for the first hour, the official rate notified in June 2023 (Greater Kashmir, 2 June 2023). See shikara ride prices.
- Gulmarg Gondola, Phase 1: ₹700 to ₹810 a ticket, as reported on 26 June and 26 July 2026 (Curly Tales; Travel Coffee). See Gondola tickets.
Trip length questions
Is three days enough for Kashmir?
Enough for Srinagar and one day out, such as Gulmarg. Add a day each for Sonamarg and Pahalgam.
Is one day enough for Gulmarg?
For the Gondola and the meadow, yes: the estimated drive is 1½–2¼ hours each way from Srinagar. Book the Gondola ahead.
Is five days enough for Kashmir?
Yes, for Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam with one night in Pahalgam, if the roads and weather cooperate.
Is a week enough?
Seven days lets you add another day out and keep a spare day for weather. Check whether Doodhpathri and Yusmarg can be reached before you count on them.
