Which one suits you?
Choose Gulmarg if…
- You want the Gondola: Phase 1 to Kongdori, Phase 2 towards Apharwat. See tickets and 2026 closures.
- You are coming in winter for snow or skiing. January nights average −7.7°C, colder than Pahalgam’s −6.1°C.
- You have one day from Srinagar. It is the shortest drive.
Choose Pahalgam if…
- You want valleys and a river: Betaab Valley (reopened 17 June 2025), Aru Valley (from 29 September 2025) and the Lidder. See Betaab or Aru.
- You will stay a night or more. The longer drive makes a day trip tight.
- You are going on the Amarnath Yatra, for which Incredible India calls Pahalgam the gateway.
Choose Sonamarg if…
- You want high-mountain scenery and the Thajiwas glacier area.
- You are heading towards Ladakh: Baltal, about 15 km east, lies at the foot of the Zoji La.
- You are travelling in winter: the Sonamarg tunnel, opened on 13 January 2025, gives “all-weather connectivity between Sonamarg and Gagangeer”, News On Air reported, though heavy snow still closed the Sonamarg road in January 2026, IANS reported.
Can you do all three?
They lie in three different directions from Srinagar: Gulmarg to the west, Pahalgam to the east and Sonamarg to the north-east. Each is a separate day out or overnight stay. How many days you need in Kashmir shows how to fit them in, and places to visit in Kashmir covers the other destinations, from Wular Lake to Gurez.
